Neil Peart and Rush, 1980

The first band I ever saw perform live was Rush.

It was on April 23rd, 1980 at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo during the "Permanent Waves" tour. I was a sophomore in high school and that Rush concert was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen.

I vividly remember a moment

Levenger 5-Year Journal

Started a new Levenger 5-Year Journal this year. I’ve filled one before, but haven’t used a new one in a few years. Each page has 5 sections, one for each of 5 years on that date. A filled page is a wonderful thing.

From Day One to Diarly

I've moved my digital journal from Day One to Diarly in 2020.

Your year changes on Jan 1st. Your life changes whenever.

I disagree with Derek Sivers' latest post, "Time is personal. Your year changes when your life changes."

Using ivy-posframe in Emacs

ivy-posframe allows the Ivy completion framework for Emacs to use a posframe popup frame for its candidate menu.

I learned of ivy-posframe from this reddit post. The part of this I was interested in was the ability to move the default candidate menu's location.

The above screenshot shows the menu

Renting DVDs in 2020

Ever since I wrote about how I kind of miss renting videos (see: I miss going to Blockbuster), I've been thinking about the way I watch movies.

All too often, what happens is that I bounce from service to service on the Apple TV looking for a movie to watch.

TiddlyWiki and Roam and my Daily Notes

A few notes about differences between TiddlyWiki and Roam related to my daily note taking process.

In October, 2018, I created a wiki at rudimentarylathe.org using the wonderful TiddlyWiki. Since then I've written just shy of 1,000 "tiddlers" there and it's been a totally pleasant experience.

The original

I miss going to Blockbuster

Here's what happens all-too-often on a typical evening at my house.

Me: "What do you want to do tonight?"
G: "Want to watch a movie?"
Me: "Sure! What sounds good?"
G: "I don't care, you pick."
Me: Watches trailers for 45 minutes

Shopping Sucks Now - VICE

Vice:

If big box stores represented the problem of the “tyranny of  choice,” the problem is that now, somewhat suddenly, perfect knowledge  of the perfect glove, for you specifically, exists, if you simply do enough research. Now instead of tyranny of choice, we have the tyranny of perfect information.

I've

I'm too lazy to write well

I don't have the patience for writing long, considered blog posts. I usually only want to share a few notes about what I'm thinking right now and to get it out there as soon as possible, so I can get back to whatever I was doing or move on to

Hyperchatting

People seem very focused on technological solutions to online communication (ActivityPub, Indieweb, this absurd BlueSky idea), but the hyperconversation approach is trying to prove that the problem is a human problem. If you read and listen to each other and try to respond thoughtfully and carefully - and try to

Early notes about Roam Research

It's been just over a week since I started using Roam and we've been getting along famously.

My 3-year keyboard nightmare is over

Typing on my 2016 MBP upsets me.

For three years that keyboard has disappointed me every time I was forced to touch it. Fumbling for the-area-in-which-the-Escape-key-should-be on the Touchbar has been the opposite of pleasant. Every time I've had to look at my hands to find the arrow keys I
